What to do When You Lose Your Car Keys

Lost car keys are something we’ve all experienced a time or two and will probably experience at least another time or two in our lives. Lost car keys can be a stressful and inconvenient situation for the driver. But before you panic over lost keys, let the team at Bedford Lock & Key help you affordably replace your keys. Depending on the key type you have, it can be fairly simple to replace. Of course, if you are away from home or do not have a spare car key, you may need our emergency lockout services.

Traditional Physical Keys

Traditional keys are the best kind of key to lose if you have to lose a car key, although we rarely get the benefit of choosing what we lose. Our team can quickly get a new car key cut by either using the spare or using the existing lock/ignition. If you lost the fob that locks and unlocks your doors, we can provide a replacement for that as well. Although you may not need a fob in the short term, as long as you have a new traditional key, you’ll be able to use your car as normal in the meantime.

Switchblade Key

Switchblade keys are the keys that combine a traditional key and fob in one. The actual key folds into the key fob, flipping out with the press of a small button. This switchblade action is what gave the newer style of key its name. you can replace a switchblade key for around $125 or you can have it replaced with a simple traditional key and fob.

Transponder Key

Transponder keys are used to help prevent theft. This key has a plastic chip embedded in the tip, that chip communicates with the ignition and won’t allow the vehicle to start with a key not containing a chip. Ideally, if you lose your transponder key, you’ll have a backup. But if you lose a key, you should always have another one made so you are never in a situation where you have no keys. At Bedford Lock & Key we can replace transponders, although it is slightly more expensive than regular physical keys.

Smart Key

Smart keys are not actually keys at all. Instead, the car has a push-button ignition and you’ll carry a small sensor that allows the car to start only when the sensor is in close proximity to the vehicle. If you misplace the sensor, you may have to make a trip to the dealer for a replacement depending on the model. But, we recommend calling us or sending a message since in some cases we are able to replace smart keys.
